An extruded rubber product differs from a molded rubber product in that the uncured rubber is forced through a die of the desired cross-section under pressure from an extruder. The extruded product is then vulcanized, or cured, in a heated pressure vessel known as an autoclave. Extruded parts can be made in sizes ranging from 1/8" in diameter to a rectangular cross-section of up to 6" by 12" and in continuous lengths of up to 60 feet.

Rubber Extrusion: The Process

The process of extruding can be compared to squeezing of toothpaste from a tube and the paste takes the shape of the tube opening. Rubber material is processed through an extruder, during the rubber extrusion process. There are two main components of rubber extruders:

A small heated drum: As the material enters the drum, it is softened through heating and then pressurized through the rotation of a screw and

A die: The pressure pushes the rubber through the die, located at the end of the extruder.

Depending on the result desired, pre-heating of the material is optional. The rubber emerges from the extruder in a profile which resembles the die shape. As the possibilities of die design are nearly limitless, so also the number of possible extruded rubber profiles. EPDM Hoses

Rubber Extrusion is a process which forces uncured rubber compounds through a die and into the desired shape. Once extruded it is immediately cured. Our process utilizes a continuous salt bath cure line. The uncured extrusions will run through a salt line at approximately 400˚ F and emerge fully cured, with the different components of the material being cross-linked.

EPDM Rubber Profiles For Construction Industry

Unlike other methods, the extrusion process lends itself well to high volume lineal foot production runs. By using a salt bath cure system, we are not restricted to limited product lengths, such as with an autoclave cure system. Extrusion also allows a higher volume of material to be processed in a shorter time, whereas the molding process produces a set number of parts per cycle. In general, rubber extrusions are produced in accordance with established RMA tolerances.

EPDM Rubber Profiles

With our main focus being on custom design manufacturing, there are minimum order requirements. The minimum order requirement will vary with profile size and material. Our production runs are based on at least a full batch of material. Material batch sizes can range from 100 lbs for Silicone up to 500-600 lbs for EPDM and other materials. Sponge compounds will also have a much higher yield than dense compounds.

An extrusion die is a steel blank that is precision cut to the shape of the cross-sectional profile of the desired part. Once in place, raw material is forced through the die and cured to create the profile. Due to unique characteristics of different materials, dies are material and durometer specific.

Bright manufactures a wide variety of Steam Continuous Vulcanizing (CV) lines – small to large angle catenary and vertical configurations — that are uniquely designed to optimize the performance on the wires and cables that are defined by customers for their specific projects.

Steam is the ideal medium for curing all types of low voltage rubber wires and cables, because rubber materials cannot withstand high temperatures used in radiant heated nitrogen lines. However, LV rubber cables do utilize the heat of vaporization of steam to reduce the curing time. Condensation of steam that occurs as a result of curing the rubber flows down the curing pipe and provides a lubricating surface for the insulated or jacketed cable, so that the length of the catenary curing pipe can be shorter on steam CVs.

In order to make the manufacturing process more efficient various continuous curing methods have been developed. What they all have in common is that the product, directly after leaving the extruder, continues onwards into a tank or tunnel with a heat-conductive medium.
